Welcome Bearcats!

Welcome to Northwest!

I hope everything went smoothly for you as you moved in. The transition to college life can bring great excitement as well as intimidation. The BSU can provide a place for you to connect with other students who are going through similar situations as well as older students who have been there before. We would love to have the opportunity to get to know you and walk alongside of you during this journey.

During the first week of classes we have several activities planned to help you connect with your fellow Bearcats and the BSU ministry. Here's what's coming up:
  • Sunday, August 28: Open House - 6-8pm at BSU
Come by the BSU house and check things out! We are located at 401 W 4th, on the corner of 4th and Mulberry - just a few blocks from campus. Have some ice cream and nachos and meet new friends!

  • Monday, August 29: Dollar Dinner + Spoons Tournament, 6:15pm at BSU
Dollar Dinner is a beloved tradition at the BSU - a great homecooked meal for just a buck! Come enjoy a great meal and a friendly atmosphere and unwind after that tough first day of classes. After dinner at 7pm we'll be having a Spoons tournament. Don't miss the insanity!

  • Tuesday, August 29: Ultimate Frisbee, 7pm by Phillips Hall
Meet us out by the Phillips Hall tennis courts for some ultimate frisbee!

  • Wednesday, August 30: Scavenger Hunt + Campfire - 6pm
We'll start at the BSU at 6 for a photo scavenger hunt all around Maryville. Teams will end up at Mozingo Lake, where we'll cook s'mores and have a devotional time. Guaranteed to be a great time!

  • Thursday, September 1: Welcome BBQ + Worship - Thursday, September 1, 6pm at BSU
Come by the BSU for our welcome cookout at 6pm and enjoy some free food. Then at 7, stick around and join us for our first worship gathering of the semester.

  • Friday, September 2: Game Night, 7pm at BSU
A fun night filled with Telephone Pictionary, Mafia, Just Dance 2, card games and many others! If you have any games that you would to bring as well, please do!

I hope you have a fantastic year at Northwest and I hope I get the chance to meet you soon!

Engage Leadership Conference Reflection

The leaders of the BSU attended a conference in St. Louis, MO the weekend of February 25-27. At the conference the leaders attended 5 main sessions and a few breakout sessions. The main sessions included an excellent speaker and worship songs performed by the Jon Meyer band and for the breakout sessions the students selected a session that sparked their interest. They had sessions ranging from knowing God's will for your life to how to use money in a God-honoring way.

The conference was more than anything a reminder to the leaders that we need to step up. As leaders we need to be more relational with others. The leaders came to the realization that improvement can be made in many areas of the BSU. As Christian leaders we need to recognize the needs of others. God spoke to the leaders of the BSU in many ways this past weekend. The trip to St. Louis was very rewarding for everyone. It will be exciting to see everyone assume their leadersip roles after getting fired up from the conference!

24/7 Prayer Recap!

24/7 Prayer is an amazing week filled with continuous prayer for a full week. The students of the BSU sign up for one hour time slots in which they go to the Prayer Room located on the top floor of the BSU. It is here that students can engage in a quiet time, reflection time, or worship time with our Creator.

The prayer room has walls covered in paper for the students to express their prayers and praises. Along with the prayer walls, the prayer room also contains a cross which enables the students to lay their struggles at the cross. There is also a prayer journal that contains prayers from the past few years. It's amazing to see what God is doing in everyone's lives.

After the week of praying 24/7 the BSU comes together for a testimony night. At testimony night the students reflect on their prayer time and share their experience with others. Taking the time to show how God is working in your life is very important because God can use one person's situation to be a light to others. God desires a relationship with his children and 24/7 is a perfect time to reconnect with Him.

Save the Date Recap

Save the Date was an opportunity for the men of the BSU to show their appreciation for their sisters in Christ. They had every detail planned out, which really impressed us girls. When we arrived at the BSU the men had valet parking which was very helpful for the girls wearing heels. As we entered the BSU, the boys escorted us to our seats which were personalized with a Father's love letter that had numerous encouraging verses from the bible. The Father's love letter was very sentimental and meant a lot to the girls.

The boys had decorated the BSU to make it look like a restaurant and we were all impressed with the attention to detail! After we ate a delicious meal of chicken parmesan and cheesecake, we played "Guy Jeopardy" which had categories regarding everything a boy would like. The categories ranged from Call of Duty to cars. After we accumulated points playing this game we used them to buy services during the auction that the boys held. The men gave away everything from a free candy bar to a car wash.

A big ticket item was having one of the boys sing your favorite Christian song to you. After the game, we concluded the night by having a dance party which is always a good time. I believe I can speak for the girls when I say we were touched with the amount of time and effort the boys put into Save the Date. We were thoroughly impressed and feel blessed to have these men as our brothers in Christ.

Flag Football vs MoWest

Every year the Bearcats and the Griffons square off on the gridiron in a heated battle (and we all know who wins) but what you may not know about is the game before the game. Each year the BSU's from Northwest and Missouri Western square off in a match that is only slightly lower in the departments of intense rivalry and football talent. This year the NW/MoWest game is the same weekend as our Getaway fall retreat, so we've moved our annual showdown to Saturday, September 25.

The game will be at 10am in Maryville at the intramural fields across from Phillips Hall. Everyone is invited to come cheer on the Bearcats (or Griffons, if you must) or join in the game! In all seriousness, it's a great time to get together with brothers and sisters in Christ and have a fun time together.

Afterward we'll head back to the BSU for lunch and then will head together to the Life Light Missouri Concert in Bethany, MO. It's free and some great names will be there, including Lincoln Brewster, Remedy Drive and Vota. You won't want to miss it!!
